Frequently Asked Questions

General

If I can’t find the information here, what should I do?

This FAQ page is meant to address questions regarding the Nike FCO program.  If you still cannot find the information you are looking for, please contact Sumerra at auditortraining@sumerra.com  or use the contact block at the bottom of this page.

Are there any limits to the number of auditors per company?

There is no limit.

Am I guaranteed to get Nike audits if I complete the training?

Receiving training and becoming approved does NOT guarantee audits – it only allows the opportunity to bid for audits

Can a company be approved?

Individuals are trained and approved, not companies. EVERY INDIVIDUAL who will lead Nike audits must receive training and approval.  However, most auditors will rely on their company to provide insurance and other requirements of the program.

Requirements and Qualifications

What the the requirements to be an auditor?

Auditors/Auditing Companies conducting Audits in the FCO Program must meet the following insurance requirements:

  • Workers Compensation or equivalent with statutory limits, as required by applicable local laws

Individual Auditors

To be eligible to attend a Nike Auditor training, you must meet the following qualifications:

  • 4 year college degree in a related field (HR, Environmental, Industrial Hygiene, Safety, HR, Etc.) and 2+ years relevant auditing experience; or
  • 6+ years of factory Auditing Experience; or
  • 50+ factory audits in the past year

It is Nike’s and Sumerra’s expectation that the Auditors attending these trainings have prior experience and training from the Auditing Company.  These trainings are to cover the Nike Standards and expectations.  Therefore, previous knowledge/experience/training on how to conduct social and HSE factory audits is a requirement

Auditors will be approved to conduct audits in countries where they meet the following qualifications:

  • The auditor either currently resides in the specific country or has lived in the country for a substantial amount of time
    • In some cases, auditors who do not or have not lived in the country may still be approved to conduct audits in that country, based on prior experience.  This is done on a case by case basis and needs approval through Nike
  • The auditor speaks the local language
  • The auditor is familiar with local laws and local customs

Do I need to be both an HSE and Labor auditor to conduct Nike audits?

No, however, you should note that each Nike factory visit will consist of both a labor audit and HSE Audit being conducted during the same visit.  In order to bid on a Bundle of audits within the Nike Program, you must meet the following criteria:

  1. You are an Approved Auditor to conduct BOTH HSE and Labor Audits; or
  2. You are an Auditing Company that has 1 approved HSE Auditor and 1 Approved Labor Auditor and BOTH auditors will be sent to the factory (during the same visit) to conduct the audits

How do I find out my auditor quality score?

Auditor quality scores will be shared with auditors on a quarterly basis.  This process is currently in development and more information will be provided in the near future.

I understand my approval is for 1-year, after that do I need to apply again and take the training again?

Nike is constantly making changes and updates to its audit standards, processes, and protocols and therefore information Nike or Sumerra provided to Auditors previously, may no longer be applicable information.  Therefore auditors will be required to maintain approval status by participating in the Approval Status Program (ASP) on an annual basis.  Status maintenance will required continued experience and education (training).  The level of refresher training will be determined by several factors such as:

  • Auditor Quality Scores
  • Recent (within 18 months) auditing experience
  • Recent (within 18 months) attendance at Nike Auditor Trainings provided by Sumerra

If I change companies, do I lose my approval status?

Generally, no. We are approving individuals and not companies. However, if changing companies impacts maintenance of certain criteria (e.g. insurance) this could result in loss of approval. We will be requiring approved individuals to update us if they change companies so we can maintain a current contact list that is available to facilities and reconfirm they remain eligible based on the criteria.

Training

Will the training teach me how to be an auditor?

No. It is Nike’s and Sumerra’s expectation that the Auditors attending these trainings have prior experience and training from the Auditing Company. These trainings are to cover the Nike Standards and expectations only..

What if I am already approved as a Nike Auditor, do I need to take the new training?

Any auditor who wants to conduct Nike Audits must complete a training session held by Sumerra to become approved.  Starting in April, 2018, if you were previously approved by Sumerra, you will be required to complete the new training training to maintain your approval status as there have been significant changes to the Nike NCAT audit tool and the Nike FCO program.

When is the training?

The training is being facilitated in our online learning management system (LMS). Therefore it is self-paced and is not a set date.  Once deems eligible, trainees can enroll and complete the training in their own time.   Each approval type (HSE, Labor) will require completion of a specific ‘learning plan’ which consists of a group of courses.  These courses include e-learning modules, tests, Q&A/Office hours, and activities.

Payment

Instead of paying individually, can we pay for a group of trainees?

Yes.  In order to pay for a group of applicants or trainees, please fill out the offline payment form here or send an email to auditortraining@sumerra.com with the following information:

  1. Method of payment (e.g. credit card, wire payment)
  2. The approval program or programs you are applying for (e.g. HSE, Labor)
  3. Number of applicants for each type
  4. Billing Address

We will then send you an invoice for payment.  Once payment is received, we will provide you with a unique code that can be used by the specific number of applicants as payment in the training platform.
